Sines Castle

For those who like to relive the history of Portugal, especially medieval times, you really must visit Sines Castle.

This is a point responsible for the origin of the town of Sines, since in the 14th century King Pedro I granted Sines a charter and administrative autonomy from Santiago do Cacém on the condition that a defensive fence be built around the town.

The monarch thus gave in to the demands of the bourgeois people of Sines and imposed the construction of the castle because he considered it important to protect this area of coastline from corsairs.

At the time, the castle of Sines was an important lookout point and defence of the Alentejo area.

Later on, Estêvão da Gama was one of the mayors of Sines and carried out work on this fortress.

It is said that it was here that his son, the navigator Vasco da Gama, discoverer of the Maritime Route to India and one of the greatest figures in Portuguese history, was born.

As well as all the history associated with Sines Castle, this is also a great place to enjoy a fantastic view over the Bay of Sines and enjoy the sunset in the late afternoon.

Sines Castle is 550 metres from Hotel AP Sines.
