Army Day brings together 1,200 soldiers and 170 vehicles in Viana do Castelo

Until next Sunday the 29th, Viana do Castelo is hosting the official Army Day celebrations, bringing together around 1,200 military personnel and 170 vehicles to promote the activities taking place all over the city. The celebrations include an extensive programme of military ceremonies, demonstrations, exhibitions, tributes, concerts, book presentations and charity races, among various activities for the community.

Today, Tuesday 24th, the highlights are the inaugurations of Expo Exército 2023, in the Marina Garden, and the Technology Exhibition, in the Viana do Castelo Cultural Centre. Also scheduled for today is the presentation of the book “D. João I e o Exército”, at the Viana do Castelo Municipal Library, at 5pm, and the opening of the exhibition “D. João I”, at the Old Town Hall, at 6pm; followed by the opening of the exhibition “In Tempo Real”, in the same space.
On Wednesday 25th, at 11am, there will be a demonstration of the inactivation of explosive devices in the Marina Garden and, at 3pm, a cynotechnical demonstration in the same place. The Viana do Castelo Cultural Centre hosts a Chamber Music concert at 18h00.
On Thursday 26 October, the programme includes the opening of the Technological Exhibition at the Cultural Centre at 11h00 and a demonstration of chemical weapons capabilities in the Marina Garden at the same time. In the afternoon, at 2pm, the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo hosts the Gender Perspective Seminar. The Jardim da Marina will once again host the cynotechnical demonstration from 15:00 and the Cultural Centre will host a Chamber Music concert at 18:00. Praça da Liberdade hosts a Youth Concert at 22h00. That evening, at 11.55pm, the Marina Garden will host the Night Parachute Jump and at 11.59pm there will be fireworks.

On 27 October, at 9am, the Municipal Library hosts the Seminar “The Modernisation of War”. That afternoon, at 5pm, there will be a Ceremony of Homage to the Dead in Largo 9 de Abril, followed by a Tribute to the Hunter Battalion No. 9 in the same place. On the evening of 27 October, Praça da Liberdade will host a concert by the Army Light Orchestra.

On 28 October, at 10am, the Solidarity Race and “SUPERA” activities will take place on the North Beach. The Army plaque unveiling in the Eixo Atlântico Square is scheduled for 12 noon. That afternoon, at 3pm, the Lima River will host the Operational Demonstration and, at 4pm, the José Natário Municipal Pavilion will host the Gymnastic and Musical Sarau. At 6pm, the Sá de Miranda Municipal Theatre will also host the Army Symphonic Band Concert.
Sunday 29 October will be marked by a Mass of Thanksgiving and Suffrage at the Sanctuary of Senhora da Agonia at 11am; at 12pm, Campo d’Agonia will host the Military Ceremony and at 5pm, the Army Expo will close the celebrations at Fort Santiago da Barra.
