What to Visit in Faro

Faro is the capital of the Algarve and, as such, a must-see for anyone visiting the Algarve.

In Faro, we recommend exploring the historic center, where you can visit Vila Adentro, Mouraria and Bairro Ribeirinho. Vila Adentro has ancient walls, more than 2,000 years old, and is a beautiful area characterized by narrow cobbled streets and 16th century houses.

Largo da Sé is another place to visit in Faro, where you’ll find the Church of Santa Maria. This church was a Roman temple and Arab mosque until it was converted into a church after the Reconquista. Inside you can see Renaissance and Baroque details, making this one of the most beautiful churches in the Algarve. Ideal if you like historical monuments.

Another historic spot in the city of Faro is Praça D. Afonso III, where you can see a statue paying homage to Dom Afonso III, the king who conquered Faro from the Moors in 1249. And for art lovers, this square also features the Faro Municipal Museum, with exhibitions of sacred art and archaeology.

But Faro is not just made up of historic areas. The city’s natural areas are also beautiful to visit, such as the Ria Formosa Natural Park, with its barrier islands, canals, salt marshes, dunes and salt pans. A perfect area to enjoy the peace of nature, go birdwatching and observe the diversity of habitats.

And for those who want to spread out their towels and sunbathe, another natural area to visit is Praia de Faro, with its beautiful sandy beaches and crystal-clear water.

Finally, downtown Faro is another must-see. Here you can enjoy the Faro Marina and the city’s best bars, restaurants and cafés.

Downtown Faro is also home to the AP Eva Senses hotel, a 4-star hotel perfect for your stay in the city, with a privileged view of the Marina and the Ria Formosa Natural Park.
