What to visit in and around Montargil

The Alto Alentejo is full of beautiful landscapes and places to visit. And in and around Montargil, there are some of the most beautiful places in the Alentejo.

Here we’ve listed several of them for you to discover and enjoy during your vacation in Montargil.

What to see in Montargil

First of all, we have to talk about the wonderful Montargil Dam, where you can practice water sports such as canoeing, wakeboarding or riding a motorcycle.

As well as sports, this dam offers fantastic views to enjoy, especially in the late afternoon, creating a romantic atmosphere to share with your better half.

We then head to the Montargil Swing, which also offers sensational views of the dam.

Montargil is also rich in religious and historical heritage with its Mother Church (built in the 16th century), the Chapel of São Sebastião and the Church of Misericórdia.

To end your visit to Montargil, stroll along Rua do Comércio, visit the Miradouro, the Chapel of Santo António and the Mural of the School Panels.

What to visit in Ponte de Sor

In Ponte de Sor there is also a lot to see. Start in the historic center, where you can see street art and then head to the Arts and Culture Center. This space is housed in an old cereal milling and rice husking factory and has two industrial archaeology centers. This is where you’ll find the world’s largest mosaic made from cork stoppers.

Afterwards, take a stroll along the riverside park and the Ribeira de Sor waterfront and visit the Mother Church of Ponte de Sor.

Finally, stroll through the Campo da Restauração garden and visit the old Paços do Concelho building.

What to visit around Montargil

Near Montargil there are also many fantastic places to visit.

The first place we suggest is the village of Galveias, ideal for those who like to visit religious heritage sites, as this village is rich in emblematic churches, such as the Igreja da Misericórdia (Church of Mercy), the Igreja Matriz (Mother Church), the Igreja de Santo António (Church of St. Anthony) and the Capelas de São Pedro and São João (Chapels of St. Peter and St. John). Galveias also has the Sanctuary of São Saturnino, which offers beautiful views.

The second place we suggest is Vila de Aviz, which is perfect for a stroll. Here you can stroll around the walls of the Castle of Avis, visit the Convent of São Bento de Avis, the Town Hall, the Mother Church, the Church of Misericórdia and the Pillory. If you like visiting medieval sites, the town of Aviz is perfect for you.

Finally, we suggest you visit Alter do Chão, especially if equestrian art is something you love, as this is where the oldest Portuguese royal stud farm is located: the Alter Stud Farm. A visit to this Stud Farm includes a visit to the Páteo das Éguas, the stables for the stallions, the Casa dos Trens and the Falconry and Falconry Museum. You can also visit the historic center of Alter do Chão, the Alter do Chão Castle, the 16th century fountain, the Misericórdia Church and Old Hospital and the Mother Church.
